Key takeaways

  • The Columbarium is in North Oak, Westbrook, on or near Acorn Street, rather than in Charter Hill or City Center. Charter Hill is a separate Westbrook sub-district.
  • The accessible location is a memorial complex, not a broad cemetery district Nearby roads, the North Oak roundabout and surrounding hillside should not be treated as part of the Columbarium proper.
  • Many niches are fixed, but others appear only after particular quest outcomes, including deaths in Happy Together, Woman of La Mancha, Every Breath You Take and *Phantom Liberty*’s Somewhat Damaged.
  • New Dawn Fades is the major story visit In the Temperance ending, Johnny visits the niches reserved for V and Rogue and leaves personal mementoes.
  • The Edgerunners memorials were added with Update 2.0 and do not require the Phantom Liberty expansion.
  • There is no conventional Columbarium vendor, loot room, combat arena or purchasable property.

About this guide

Scope: Cyberpunk 2077 base game, including content added by later free updates. The Columbarium also appears in Phantom Liberty, but this guide treats it as a Night City location rather than a Dogtown location. Status: Research-backed guide. The in-game niche system changes according to quest outcomes and later patches, so the named directory below separates fixed, conditional and update-added entries. Some minor inscriptions are difficult to verify from accessible published sources and are listed as unresolved rather than guessed.

Overview

The North Oak Columbarium is Night City’s principal memorial complex, built into the southern hills of North Oak, in the Westbrook district. It is not a conventional cemetery. Instead, it consists of long banks of memorial niches holding cremation urns, surrounded by terraces, walkways, display screens and quiet public spaces.

For most of the game, the Columbarium is an optional place to explore. It has no ordinary shop, vendor or combat encounter, but it is one of the most consequential environmental locations in Cyberpunk 2077. Its niches record the deaths of people connected to V’s story, characters from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, famous figures from the wider Cyberpunk setting, and several people whose fates depend directly on the player’s decisions.

The location becomes especially important in Happy Together, in the Temperance ending’s epilogue New Dawn Fades, and during post-update exploration of the Edgerunners memorials. It is also one of the clearest examples of the game turning player choice into a visible change in the world.

Location and boundaries

The Columbarium lies in the southern part of North Oak, a wealthy, elevated sub-district of Westbrook. It is positioned away from the dense towers and commercial streets of central Night City, with the main entrance reached from the North Oak road network. Published location references identify the site with Acorn Street, while other descriptions place it on Milagro Terrace within the North Oak hills. These names describe the approach and terrace setting rather than separate locations.

The practical boundary is the enclosed memorial site itself:

The following should be treated as neighbouring geography, not as Columbarium subareas:

The Columbarium is sometimes described loosely as a cemetery or graveyard, but its actual in-game design is closer to a large urban memorial facility. The dead are represented by niches and plaques rather than open graves.

Internal layout and usable subareas

The game does not provide a formal hierarchy of named wings, halls or numbered sections. For practical exploration, the location can be divided into the following verified functional areas.

Entrance and information screen

The entrance contains the main display panel used to check the Columbarium layout during New Dawn Fades. In ordinary exploration, this area acts as the arrival point and orientation marker.

In the Temperance epilogue, Johnny pays for the reserved niches through the display system before entering the memorial area. The mission objective specifically requires checking the layout, locating the ordered niche and leaving a memento.

Main memorial structures

The central structures contain the majority of the visible niches. This is where players find memorials to Night City citizens, story characters and wider Cyberpunk figures.

Niches are arranged in long walls and architectural blocks. They are marked by plaques, symbols and short epitaphs. Some names can be scanned or inspected; others function primarily as environmental detail.

Vigil and tribute area

The Columbarium includes an open memorial or vigil space used for the Edgerunners tributes. Update 2.0 added memorial niches for David Martinez and several members of his crew. These are located together as a recognisable group rather than being spread randomly across the complex.

Rear and side paths

The farther sections are useful when searching for individual niches. Several story-related plaques, including the memorial associated with Andrew from Happy Together, are tucked away from the most obvious entrance route. Guides for the quest direct the player towards a niche in a less prominent part of the complex.

The rear of the Columbarium is also important for the Temperance epilogue, where Johnny visits the reserved niches for V and Rogue.

Access and routes

From the open world

The Columbarium can be reached by driving or walking through North Oak. The cleanest practical route is:

The area is open during normal free-roam play. You do not need to complete a main quest before visiting it.

Fast travel

A fast-travel point is associated with the entrance area. The exact availability may depend on the player’s current state, especially during ending-specific sequences. During New Dawn Fades, the Columbarium is visited as part of a linear epilogue rather than as an ordinary free-roam stop.

Mission-only differences

The regular open-world Columbarium and the version encountered during New Dawn Fades are the same broad location, but the mission version has scripted interactions:

The mission does not turn the site into a combat area or unlock a new permanent service.

From the open world

  1. 01
Travel to North Oak in Westbrook.
  2. 02
Follow the road towards the southern hillside and the Columbarium entrance.
  3. 03
Look for the memorial complex and its entrance display.
  4. 04
Enter on foot and use the paths and niche walls to search.

Security, rules and ordinary NPCs

The Columbarium is presented as a regulated public facility. Broadcasts warn visitors that lighting candles and spray-painting are forbidden. In-world descriptions identify the site as being protected by Arasaka security turrets, an intentionally corporate-looking security arrangement for a government memorial complex. Warnings are presented in several languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish.

The security is largely atmospheric in ordinary exploration. There is no standard Columbarium police checkpoint, gang patrol or fixed hostile encounter that must be defeated to access the niches.

Ordinary visitors

The site may contain ambient visitors and mourners, but there is no verified permanent resident or named Columbarium caretaker who functions as a normal conversation NPC. Do not confuse temporary mission visitors, scripted drivers or ambient mourners with residents of the location.

Factions

No faction controls the Columbarium as a headquarters or quest zone. Its apparent ownership and security arrangement are separate matters:

Factions

Factions
NameDetails
Government of Night Cityassociated with the facility’s civic function.
Arasakasupplies or operates the security turrets referenced by the location’s warnings.
Visitors and mournerscivilians using the site for remembrance.
Story characterspresent only during particular quests or endings.

Note

“You didn’t take me to the moon, but you were there with me.”

Named niche directory

The directory below consolidates named entries verified in accessible research. Conditions are important because the Columbarium is not static. Some niches are present from the beginning, while others appear only after the player causes or witnesses a character’s death. The principal location source explicitly notes that the niche list contains both permanent and action-dependent entries.

Fixed or generally available niches

Some entries above require care when interpreting the plaque. A memorial does not always prove that the character’s body is physically present, and Johnny’s niche is particularly symbolic because the character’s identity is complicated by his engram, the Relic and the unresolved status of his original body. The memorial exists even though the game’s story treats Johnny’s digital existence separately.

Edgerunners memorial group

Update 2.0 added a group of memorials for characters who died in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The tribute is available in the base game after the free update and does not require ownership of Phantom Liberty.

The wording is a reference to David and Lucy’s relationship and the anime’s final imagery. The group is a memorial addition, not a playable Edgerunners questline. Lucy does not appear at the Columbarium as a normal NPC.

Real-world and cross-media references

The Columbarium also contains memorials and names associated with people connected to the development and wider culture of Cyberpunk 2077. Because several small inscriptions are not consistently documented in accessible sources, this guide does not claim that the directory is an exhaustive transcription of every plaque.

Missions and activities

Happy Together

Happy Together is the most important ordinary-play quest connected directly to the Columbarium.

Barry, V’s neighbour, is grieving the death of Andrew, his tortoise. If V ignores Barry’s emotional state or handles the conversation badly, the quest can end tragically. To pursue the more positive route:

The niche is not a reward container and does not provide an item. Its importance is narrative and procedural: visiting it supplies information required for the better outcome of the quest.

New Dawn Fades

New Dawn Fades is the Temperance-ending epilogue. It is available only if the player chooses the route in which Johnny keeps V’s body after the final Mikoshi decision.

The quest begins away from the Columbarium, then takes Johnny to a guitar shop before Steve drives him to the memorial complex. At the Columbarium:

The game identifies the payment as 4,000 eddies for two places reserved for 100 years. V’s niche is listed as rented until 21 July 2177, implying a 21 July 2077 date for the epilogue if the reservation begins exactly 100 years earlier.

This is an ending scene rather than a repeatable side activity. Reaching the Columbarium during this sequence does not create an independent free-roam branch.

Happy Together

  1. 01
Speak to Barry after the quest becomes available.
  2. 02
Wait for the follow-up opportunity if necessary.
  3. 03
Enter the Columbarium in North Oak.
  4. 04
    Find Andrew’s niche.
  5. 05
Return to Barry and mention that V visited Andrew’s memorial.
  6. 06
Continue the conversation with empathy rather than dismissing Barry’s grief.
  7. 07
Speak to the police officers again when prompted.

New Dawn Fades

  1. 01
Follow the mission marker to the entrance display.
  2. 02
    Pay for the reserved niches.
  3. 03
    Enter the memorial area.
  4. 04
    Find V’s niche.
  5. 05
Leave the pendant as V’s memento.
  6. 06
    Find Rogue’s niche.
  7. 07
    Leave Pride.
  8. 08
Return to Steve and continue the departure sequence.

For a first visit, use this route

  1. 01
Start at the entrance. Read the warning signs and inspect the display.
  2. 02
Walk the central walls. Look for the most recognisable names first, including Alt Cunningham, Johnny’s memorial and major story characters.
  3. 03
Search side and rear paths. Andrew’s niche and several less prominent memorials are not necessarily on the first wall encountered.
  4. 04
Visit the Edgerunners group. The Update 2.0 memorials are grouped as a tribute area.
  5. 05
Return after major story decisions. Conditional niches can appear after deaths, betrayals and expansion outcomes.
  6. 06
Avoid assuming a missing niche proves a bug. Some memorials are progression-dependent, while others may differ between patch versions or ending states.
  7. 07
Use the fast-travel point on departure if it is available in the current gameplay state.

Progression changes

The Columbarium is one of the game’s clearest examples of persistent narrative state.

Early game

The site can be visited during ordinary free roam, but many story-linked niches may not yet be present. Fixed memorials and general environmental plaques are the safest entries to expect.

After side quests

Deaths caused or permitted by V can add niches. The most clearly documented examples include:

After Phantom Liberty

Alex’s memorial can appear following Somewhat Damaged. This is a progression state, not a universal replacement for Alex’s other possible outcomes.

After the final mission

The Temperance ending adds dedicated niches for V and Rogue during New Dawn Fades. These are particularly unusual because they are created as part of the ending sequence rather than simply being discovered during an earlier visit.

Hazards and secrets

Turrets and rules

The Columbarium’s warning broadcasts and Arasaka-linked turrets establish a controlled, surveilled atmosphere. However, there is no evidence of a normal hostile-security combat sequence attached to the location. Do not approach the site expecting a stealth mission or hidden turret loot room.

Blade Runner reference

Roy Batty’s memorial is a direct reference to Blade Runner. The epitaph echoes the film’s famous “tears in rain” speech, making the plaque one of the Columbarium’s most recognisable pieces of external media trivia.

Edgerunners reference

The Edgerunners memorials are not merely decorative background names. They form a deliberate post-launch tribute to the anime’s dead characters and allow players to see the consequences of the show’s story represented inside Night City.

Johnny’s memorial

Johnny’s memorial is thematically complicated. V can visit a niche dedicated to Johnny even though Johnny’s active presence in the game is an engram housed on the Relic. The memorial represents public memory and the identity of Robert John Linder, while the character V interacts with is a digital construct with his own disputed account of his death.

What the Columbarium does not contain

The following are not verified as standard Columbarium features:

The entrance display is a memorial-management interface, not a general shop or service terminal.
