Key takeaways

  • Oil Fields is a northern Badlands subregion, not a district of Night City proper.
  • The area’s most important story location is the symbolic grave site visited during Chippin’ In.
  • Dialogue and inscription choices at Johnny’s grave can affect access to Blistering Love, Rogue’s storyline and the conditions associated with the secret ending.
  • The Hanged Man Tarot mural is found on a water tower or elevated industrial structure in the northern oil-field area.
  • The region contains no verified regular shops, ripperdocs, apartments, restaurants or resident settlement.
  • Oil Fields and 101 North are separate named fast-travel points Nearby Badlands locations such as Rocky Ridge, the Eastern Wastelands and the Southern Desert are not part of Oil Fields.

About this guide

Base game scope: This guide covers the Oil Fields location in the original Cyberpunk 2077, including the wider mapped area referred to in some sources as the Northern Oil Fields or North Sunrise Oil Fields. It excludes Phantom Liberty areas and does not treat nearby Badlands subregions as part of Oil Fields.

Overview

The Oil Fields are one of the northernmost explorable areas in Cyberpunk 2077. They lie beyond Night City’s built-up districts, on the northern edge of the Badlands, and form a bleak industrial landscape of abandoned drilling equipment, blackened ground, oil pools, ruined structures and skeletal gantries.

Unlike most open-world locations, Oil Fields are not a conventional settlement. There is no neighbourhood community, commercial strip or regular vendor network. Their significance is mainly environmental and narrative. The area becomes important during Chippin’ In, when V and Johnny Silverhand travel there after dealing with Adam Smasher’s former associate, Grayson. It is also home to one of the game’s Tarot graffiti murals, The Hanged Man, and a fast-travel dataterm named Oil Fields.

The location is easy to underestimate if it is treated as merely the small patch of ground around Johnny’s grave. The in-game Oil Fields region is broader: the grave is one story site within a larger, largely empty oil-production landscape. The nearby 101 North fast-travel point is also associated with the northern oil-field zone, but it should be listed separately rather than treated as a synonym for the Oil Fields dataterm.

Included named places

The following names are verified as belonging to, or directly identifying, the oil-field zone:

The grave site is not presented as a separate fast-travel location or formal named settlement. It is best treated as a story landmark within Oil Fields.

---

Oil Fields are designed as a visual counterpoint to Night City. Instead of crowds, neon advertising and dense vertical architecture, the area uses empty space, corrosion and polluted ground. Its abandoned equipment implies that the oil industry once mattered considerably more to the region, while its current condition suggests industrial collapse or abandonment.

At night, fire and illuminated oil pools give the landscape an especially hostile appearance. The area can look deceptively open, but the industrial skeletons create uneven routes, obstructed sightlines and elevated platforms that reward climbing and scanning.

There is no evidence that the area functions as an active oil-production facility in 2077. The background lore associates ownership and historical control of the wider oil fields with corporations including Petrochem and SovOil, with Night Corp also connected to the region in broader source material. That ownership background should not be confused with an active corporate facility in the playable area. The game does not provide a regular SovOil or Petrochem security compound here.

Included named places

Reaching Oil Fields

Oil Fields is accessible by road from the northern side of Night City and the Badlands. During ordinary free roam, the simplest method is to follow the main northern routes until the map transitions into the open oil-field landscape.

The area is also reached naturally during Chippin’ In. After the sequence involving Rogue, Grayson and the container holding Johnny’s Porsche 911, the quest sends V towards the Oil Fields. You do not need to drive Johnny’s Porsche to reach the destination. Any available vehicle can be used.

Fast travel

The two points should not be merged into a single entry. They are separate map locations within the wider northern oil-field zone. Fast travel points become usable after the game’s fast-travel system is unlocked, which occurs after completing The Ride.

Suggested exploration route

For a first visit, the following route gives the clearest view of the area without repeatedly crossing the same ground:

Some sections appear to be scenery or inaccessible background geometry rather than separate explorable subareas. The game does not provide a complete corporate refinery interior or a multi-level oil facility comparable to the Petrochem compounds elsewhere in the Badlands.

---

The most important site in Oil Fields is the place identified as Johnny Silverhand’s grave. During Chippin’ In, Johnny and V stop beside the rubble and have one of their most consequential conversations.

The grave is symbolic rather than a conventional cemetery. The location is an isolated patch of industrial waste, which fits Johnny’s uncertain legacy and the story’s recurring concern with memory, identity and the way corporations dispose of people. Grayson claims that Johnny’s body was thrown into the oil fields, but the game does not present a conventional, independently verified burial site. The location should therefore be described as the place treated as Johnny’s grave during the quest, not as proof that the physical remains are definitely present.

At the site, V can inscribe Johnny’s initials and then choose dialogue responses. The conversation influences Johnny and V’s relationship and can determine whether the side job Blistering Love becomes available. That side job continues Johnny’s connection with Rogue and is also relevant to certain ending routes.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Fast travel to Oil Fields, or approach from the southern road.
  2. 02
Walk or drive through the central industrial area and identify the large tanks, drills and elevated structures.
  3. 03
Locate the marked objective area for Johnny’s grave if Chippin’ In is active.
  4. 04
After completing the conversation, explore the nearby water-tower structures for The Hanged Man.
  5. 05
Continue north towards 101 North if you want to inspect the broader regional boundary.
  6. 06
Return by road rather than attempting to treat every fenced or blocked industrial section as accessible.

Grave conversation checklist

If you want to preserve the options associated with Johnny’s relationship and Rogue’s questline:

Guides commonly summarise the successful approach as acknowledging Johnny’s failures while still allowing him a second chance. Exact wording can vary by language or edition, so the important factor is the overall sequence and tone rather than relying only on one displayed line.

The conversation is missable in the practical sense that hostile choices can prevent the desired follow-up quest. If the outcome matters to you, make a manual save before interacting with the grave.

---

Grave conversation checklist: steps

  1. 01
Begin Chippin’ In and complete the preceding sequence.
  2. 02
Travel to the Oil Fields when the quest sends you there.
  3. 03
    Interact with the grave site.
  4. 04
    Choose a non-hostile inscription.
  5. 05
Use conciliatory or reflective dialogue rather than insulting Johnny.
  6. 06
Complete the conversation and accept Johnny’s request concerning Rogue.
  7. 07
Check the Journal for Blistering Love afterwards.

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is the Oil Fields’ Tarot graffiti mural. It is positioned on an elevated industrial structure, commonly described as a water tower in the northern oil-field area. Different guides describe the exact supporting structure slightly differently, but they agree on the regional placement and the card’s association with Oil Fields.

How to find it

The card is easy to miss from ground level because the area has several similar-looking tanks and towers. A systematic scan of tall structures is more reliable than following the road alone.

The Hanged Man is thematically appropriate for Oil Fields. The card represents suspension, sacrifice and a painful transition, all of which reflect Johnny’s position in the story and V’s uncertain relationship with him. The game presents Tarot locations as more than ordinary collectibles, placing many of them close to major story sites or characters.

How to find it

  1. 01
Travel to the Oil Fields fast-travel point.
  2. 02
Look across the open industrial ground for a tall tank or water-tower structure.
  3. 03
Use ladders, nearby platforms or accessible vehicle positioning to reach the elevated section.
  4. 04
Scan the Tarot mural when it comes into view.
  5. 05
Confirm the card in the Tarot collection and continue the Fool on the Hill activity if required.

Collectible directory

No other fixed Tarot mural is verified within the Oil Fields boundary. The other Badlands Tarot locations belong to separate subregions and should not be folded into this directory.

---

Oil Fields contain industrial scenery and abandoned structures, but it is important not to overstate their functionality.

Not verified as available services

The following should not be treated as functioning Oil Fields facilities:

The presence of structures does not establish that they are enterable or functional. Oil Fields is primarily a scenery and mission space.

---

Oil Fields are described as having no inhabitants in the ordinary settlement sense. There is no named local community and no recurring resident cast associated with the region. During story content, Johnny and V are visitors rather than residents.

The area also lacks a clearly documented permanent faction base. Corporate names such as Petrochem and SovOil are relevant to the history and ownership of the wider oil fields, but the playable Oil Fields area is not a standard corporate combat compound with a named commander, security office or mission board.

NPC directory

Story-associated visitors

These characters should be treated as mission visitors or story-linked figures, not permanent Oil Fields residents.

Ordinary NPCs

No stable civilian population or named ordinary resident group is verified for the area. Any incidental people encountered during free roam should not automatically be classified as local residents because the game’s open-world encounter system can place transient NPCs in nearby roads and spaces.

Story-associated visitors

Law enforcement and security

No dedicated NCPD precinct, checkpoint or permanently staffed security gate is verified inside Oil Fields. The location is not presented as a police-controlled neighbourhood. Its isolation is part of the area’s identity.

This does not mean the region is universally safe. Environmental hazards, mission encounters and hostile activity elsewhere in the Badlands should be kept separate from Oil Fields’ fixed content. There is no basis for describing Oil Fields as a regular gang stronghold or a permanent combat arena.

---

Chippin’ In

Chippin’ In is the defining mission for Oil Fields. The area appears during the later part of the side job, after the events at the oil tanker and the recovery of Johnny’s Porsche.

The quest does not turn Oil Fields into a conventional combat mission. Its focus is dialogue, character development and progression flags.

Fool on the Hill

The Oil Fields Tarot mural contributes to Fool on the Hill, Misty’s Tarot-card activity. The Hanged Man is a fixed collectible and is not a random drop.

The card can be collected independently once Tarot murals are available, although some guides note that the Tarot system becomes available after the early main-story progression around The Heist.

Blistering Love

Blistering Love is not a mission that takes place entirely in Oil Fields, but its availability can depend on the conversation held at Johnny’s grave. The Oil Fields sequence is therefore a progression gate for Johnny and Rogue’s story thread.

---

Oil Fields do not provide a standard dungeon-style reward chest or a named weapon pickup. Its rewards are primarily narrative and collectible-based.

The conversation is particularly important because the game’s ending conditions are distributed across multiple quests and decisions. The Oil Fields exchange is relevant, but it should not be presented as the sole requirement for every ending. Guides sometimes compress several different ending conditions into a single “secret ending choice”. Treat the grave conversation as one important relationship and quest-progression step, not as a universal replacement for all other requirements.

---

Oil Fields are not a high-density combat area, but the environment creates several practical risks:

There is no reliable evidence that every dark pool is a special instant-kill hazard or that all machinery can be activated. Treat the oil as environmental scenery unless the game provides an interaction prompt.

Exploration checklist

Before leaving Oil Fields, check that you have:

---

The Oil Fields reflect the series’ recurring use of resource extraction as a symbol of corporate power and environmental decline. In the setting’s background, Petrochem’s historic drilling rights helped shape the development of the region around Night City. By 2077, the northern oil fields are presented as a legacy of that older industrial order rather than as a prosperous modern oil centre.

The landscape’s inspiration is not a single named real-world oil field. It combines familiar features of depleted oil-production zones: pumpjacks, abandoned barracks, rusting towers, polluted water and long stretches of land stripped of ordinary habitation. The art direction deliberately makes the area feel unlike the sun-baked, dusty sections of the Badlands, using black oil, smoke and industrial fire instead.

The location also carries a continuity distinction. The Oil Fields appear in Cyberpunk 2077 and are part of the wider Cyberpunk setting, but references in tabletop books or supplementary fiction should not automatically be treated as events that occur in the 2077 game location. In particular, the game’s statement that Johnny was supposedly discarded in the oil fields is presented as uncertain within the story.

---

Is Oil Fields part of Night City?

No. It is outside the city’s built-up districts and is generally treated as part of the Badlands, although it has its own regional map identity.

Is Oil Fields the same as Northside?

No. Northside is a district of Night City. Oil Fields is the northern Badlands oil-field region.

Are Northern Oil Fields and Oil Fields the same?

They refer to the same broad zone for most practical purposes, but Northern Oil Fields is the broader regional label while Oil Fields is also used as a specific fast-travel and map location name.

Where is Johnny’s grave?

It is reached during Chippin’ In in the Oil Fields. Follow the quest marker after the preceding Rogue and Grayson sequence.

Do I need Johnny’s Porsche to drive there?

No. The Porsche is thematically associated with the sequence, but any vehicle can be used to reach the Oil Fields.

Can I buy a property in Oil Fields?

No purchasable Oil Fields property is verified.

Is there a shop or ripperdoc?

No regular Oil Fields shop, vendor or ripperdoc is verified.

Where is The Hanged Man?

Look for it on an elevated water-tower or industrial tank structure in the northern Oil Fields. The exact visual description varies slightly between guides, but the regional placement is consistent.

Can I miss the Oil Fields Tarot card?

It is a fixed free-roam collectible, but it can be overlooked because it is elevated and the area contains several similar industrial structures. It is not the same as the mission-only grave interaction.

---

The broad location boundary is well supported: Oil Fields belongs to the northern Badlands and is distinct from the Eastern Wastelands, Southern Desert, Rocky Ridge and other Badlands subregions. The named fast-travel points Oil Fields and 101 North are also independently listed.

A minor discrepancy remains in secondary descriptions of the Tarot mural’s exact object. Some sources call it a water tower, while others describe it as a silver container or tank. The safe in-game description is therefore an elevated industrial structure in the northern Oil Fields, rather than a more precise architectural claim.

The game does not provide a comprehensive public directory of every background industrial prop. Accordingly, this guide lists verified named locations and meaningful environmental features without inventing names for unlabelled tanks, buildings or roads.
