About this guide

Scope: Base game Cyberpunk 2077. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Badlands gig Radar Love, the main job Life During Wartime, Militech activity and the motel’s computer files.

Overview

The Sunshine Motel is a small but important fortified site in the eastern Badlands. In 2077 it is no longer operating as a place for travellers. Militech has converted the abandoned roadside motel into a military outpost and testing facility, using it to deploy a mobile radar system against smuggling routes and Nomad traffic.

For most players, the location is encountered through Radar Love, a Dakota Smith gig in which V steals the prototype P9D/2.161 mobile radar station from the Militech compound. The motel also functions as the fast-travel point for the site and provides environmental context for the wider conflict between Militech, the Aldecaldos and independent Badlands communities.

The Sunshine Motel is easy to confuse with the nearby Sunset Motel. They are separate locations. Sunset Motel is associated with Life During Wartime and the interrogation of Anders Hellman, while Sunshine Motel is the Militech radar base used in Radar Love.

Location and boundaries

Sunshine Motel lies on Interstate 9 in the eastern Badlands, in the Rocky Ridge section of the region. The site is part of the larger Badlands rather than a separate district or town. The surrounding landscape consists of open desert, industrial infrastructure, wind turbines and long stretches of highway.

The motel’s practical boundary is the abandoned motel complex and its immediate fortified grounds. This includes:

The surrounding wind farms, Rocky Ridge settlement, fuel station and nearby Badlands sites are neighbouring locations, not subdivisions of Sunshine Motel. The wider Badlands directory places Sunshine Motel under the Rocky Ridge area and lists the wind farms as a separate nearby subarea.

Nearby but separate

These places belong to the wider Badlands region and should not be treated as rooms, annexes or subareas of the Sunshine Motel.

Reaching Sunshine Motel

By road

The easiest approach is along Interstate 9. The motel is positioned beside the highway, making it straightforward to reach by car from the Badlands road network. The location is especially easy to identify by its abandoned roadside architecture and the Militech occupation around it.

By fast travel

The Sunshine Motel dataterm is the most convenient travel point for the compound. Fast-travel listings place it among the northern or eastern Badlands travel points, near Rocky Ridge and other major roadside locations.

During Radar Love

When tracking Radar Love, the objective leads V directly to the motel. The gig becomes available from Dakota Smith after the relevant Badlands progression and requires Street Cred level 11 according to widely used quest documentation.

What the motel is in 2077

The Sunshine Motel has two distinct identities.

Former roadside motel

In the setting’s earlier history, it was a proper roadside establishment on Interstate 9. Material connected with Cyberpunk RED describes it as a Nomad-run refuge where travellers could obtain food, shelter and a locked room away from Night City. The Block clan is associated with the motel in that earlier period, including Ma Block and Tony Block.

That history is important because it explains why the site matters symbolically to the Badlands. A place once used by travellers and Nomads has become an instrument of corporate surveillance.

Militech outpost

By 2077, Militech has taken over the site and converted it into a makeshift military base. The compound is used to test and operate a mobile radar system designed to detect unauthorised vehicles and interfere with smuggling activity.

The motel’s computers contain reports attributed to Jenny Higgins. These describe the prototype Poiandres mobile radar detection system, its improved ability to detect Nomad activity, its reduced effectiveness during sandstorms and solar storms, and Militech’s campaign against smuggling vehicles. The reports also record destroyed vehicles, recovered cloaking technology and the deaths of two contractors, Private Miles and Private Lunenberg.

Residents, visitors and factions

Militech personnel

Militech is the only clearly established permanent faction occupying the site in 2077. Its personnel include soldiers, security staff and operators associated with the radar project.

The guards are not presented as named residents. They are mission enemies and corporate security personnel rather than individually identified characters.

The available material does not establish that these people are physically present at the motel when V visits. Jenny Higgins is named as the author of the reports, while Miles and Lunenberg are described as casualties. They should therefore not be listed as current residents.

Aldecaldos

The Aldecaldos are not occupants of the motel. They are connected to it through the radar project and Dakota Smith’s contract. The radar threatens Nomad movement and smuggling routes, so stealing it benefits the Aldecaldos indirectly.

Dakota’s interest is practical: the Aldecaldos want to study the system and develop a jamming signal that can help their transports avoid Militech detection.

Ordinary NPCs

No stable civilian population, motel staff or merchant roster is verified for the Sunshine Motel in the base game. Random Badlands traffic may pass nearby, but passing vehicles should not be treated as residents of the site.

There is also no verified motel receptionist, food vendor, ripperdoc, weapon shop, clothing shop or repair service operating at the location in 2077.

---

Security and enemies

Sunshine Motel is a hostile Militech compound when visited as part of Radar Love. Its defences can include:

The site is designed as an infiltration location rather than a conventional combat arena. V can approach from elevated positions, disable surveillance, use the compound’s temporary structures for cover or attack directly.

The exact enemy composition and loot can vary with game version, difficulty and mission state. This guide does not treat unverified random equipment drops as fixed Sunshine Motel rewards.

---

Buildings and facilities

Main motel building

The original motel structure forms the visual and thematic centre of the site. In 2077 it is no longer presented as a functioning accommodation business. The building and its surroundings have been absorbed into Militech’s field operation.

The motel’s rooms and corridors are primarily environmental space. The important gameplay functions are the security layout, computers, access routes and relationship to the rear garage.

Militech tents and temporary structures

Militech has added field tents and equipment around the old motel. These provide cover and create alternate routes through the compound.

One practical infiltration route begins from the south-western side, where V can climb onto a container and obtain a view over the site. From there, cameras can be disabled before moving along the tents towards the rear area.

Rear garage

The garage at the back of the complex contains the mobile radar vehicle required by Radar Love. A computer file specifically instructs personnel to replace filters in the mobile radar unit and states that the vehicle is located in the garage at the rear of the building complex.

The garage is therefore the most important functional subarea of the motel.

Fast-travel dataterm

A Sunshine Motel dataterm is located at the site. It provides travel access but is not a shop, service counter or quest-giver. Fast-travel guides list it among the eastern Badlands points.

Computers and readable evidence

The motel contains computers with files that deepen the location’s story.

Field Report #1

This report describes Militech’s testing of the Poiandres mobile radar detection system. According to Jenny Higgins, the prototype detects Nomad activity more effectively than earlier technology and can identify unauthorised vehicles at a high rate under favourable weather conditions.

Its performance declines sharply during sandstorms and solar storms. This gives the system a clear environmental limitation and helps explain why the Badlands’ harsh conditions remain useful to Nomads.

Field Report #2

The second report records Militech’s campaign against smuggling vehicles. It claims that Militech neutralised or destroyed numerous vehicles and recovered valuable goods and cloaking technology.

The report also records the deaths of Private Miles and Private Lunenberg after their vehicle detonated an anti-tank mine. These details show that the operation is not risk-free for Militech and that the Badlands remain contested territory rather than a region the corporation controls completely.

Issue Report: Mobile radar filter replacement

This technical message orders the replacement of filters in the mobile radar unit. It confirms the vehicle’s location in the rear garage and provides a small but useful detail about the facility’s maintenance routine.

Radar Love walkthrough

Mission type: Thievery gig Fixer: Dakota Smith Area: Badlands Requirement: Street Cred level 11 Objective: Steal the P9D/2.161 mobile radar station Reported rewards: €$8,580, 621 XP and 1,397 Street Cred

Roof-entry alternative

Another documented approach uses the water tower and roofline. V can climb towards the roof, eliminate or bypass the guard and approach one of the roof hatches. A Technical Ability check may allow entry through a hatch, while a lower-Technical route can involve dropping from the roof and moving back towards the garage.

Because entry points and mission scripting can behave differently across patches, treat the roof route as an alternative rather than a guaranteed superior method.

Combat route

A direct assault is possible. Clear the guards, disable cameras and deal with automated defences before taking the vehicle. This is simpler if V has strong armour, healing and vehicle-combat capability, but it can make the escape more dangerous because enemies may continue firing as the radar vehicle leaves.

The objective is not to clear every enemy permanently. Once the radar vehicle is secured, prioritise reaching Dakota’s garage.

Rewards and loot

The fixed gig rewards reported by quest guides are:

Additional equipment inside the compound should be treated as ordinary mission-area loot rather than a guaranteed unique Sunshine Motel reward. Some guides and player reports mention possible high-tier Militech equipment in or around the garage, but the evidence indicates that such items may be random or version-dependent. They should not be presented as fixed collectibles.

Exploration route

For a first visit, the following route gives the best balance between story, evidence and practical navigation:

The motel is most rewarding when treated as a compact story location rather than a large loot dungeon. Its value lies in the contrast between its former role as a traveller’s refuge and its later use as a surveillance post.

  8. 08
If Radar Love is active, steal the vehicle only after making a manual save.
  9. 09
    Deliver it to Dakota’s garage.
  10. 10
Return later in free roam if you want to inspect the site without the immediate gig objective.

Collectibles and items

Items not confirmed as fixed collectibles

Random loot may appear in the compound, but available evidence does not support a definitive fixed-item catalogue for the location.

Lore and historical significance

The Sunshine Motel illustrates a recurring Cyberpunk 2077 theme: ordinary infrastructure is repurposed by powerful institutions.

In its earlier form, the motel served independent travellers moving along Interstate 9. It offered security against raiders and the dangers of travelling outside Night City. In 2077, the same site has become an outpost for a corporation attempting to make that movement visible and controllable.

The radar project is particularly significant because it attacks a key Nomad advantage: mobility. Nomad groups rely on moving people and goods through large areas where corporate surveillance is less effective. Militech’s Poiandres system is designed to close that gap. Its weaknesses during sandstorms and solar storms also show that the Badlands themselves remain an active force in the conflict.

The location therefore connects three layers of the setting:

Lore and historical significance: steps

  1. 01
Roadside America: the motel as a practical stop for long-distance travellers.
  2. 02
Nomad culture: the site’s association with the Block clan and Badlands travel.
  3. 03
Corporate militarisation: Militech’s conversion of the site into a surveillance and anti-smuggling base.
