Overview

Dogtown is a walled combat zone in southern Night City, geographically associated with Pacifica but politically separate from the rest of the city. It is the principal setting of Phantom Liberty, and one of the few areas in Cyberpunk 2077 that feels like a genuinely different jurisdiction rather than simply another district with a new visual theme.

The district is ruled by Kurt Hansen and his BARGHEST militia at the beginning of the expansion. Its streets combine unfinished luxury developments, military checkpoints, container housing, markets, abandoned construction sites, hotels, clubs and fortified compounds. Dogtown is not merely the area around the EBM Petrochem Stadium. Its scope includes the stadium, Longshore Stacks, Golden Pacific, Luxor Heights, Terra Cognita, the Kress Street and southern industrial areas, the Black Sapphire complex, the Heavy Hearts club and several mission-only interiors and underground facilities.

About this guide

Scope: Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, including Dogtown’s exploration content, side jobs, gigs and repeatable activities. Spoilers: This guide contains major spoilers for Phantom Liberty, including its principal missions, faction leadership and several endings.

Key takeaways

Dogtown is a Pacifica sub-district, not a replacement name for all of PacificaCoastview and West Wind Estate remain neighbouring Pacifica areas outside the wall.
The principal public entrance is reached near the EBM Petrochem StadiumThe western gate provides the most convenient link with Coastview once the district is available.
The district is controlled by BARGHEST rather than NCPDNCPD is effectively excluded from Dogtown proper, while BARGHEST acts as military, police and border security.
Dogtown becomes available through the Phantom Liberty mission “Dog Eat Dog”It is not a normal base-game location, even though the wider Pacifica map exists without the expansion.
Its most important repeatable activities are airdrops, vehicle contracts, Mr Hands’ gigs, Increased Criminal Activity sites and Militech Data Terminals.
Progression changes the districtStory missions alter access to certain buildings and encounters, and the fate of Kurt Hansen changes the political balance between Chester Bennett and Jago Szabó.

Overview and history

Dogtown occupies part of what was once called Serenisands, a planned Pacifica redevelopment zone. The area was intended to become a major leisure and investment district, with hotels, mansions, resorts and the EBM Petrochem Stadium. The Unification War interrupted that development. Investors withdrew, construction stopped and unfinished projects became shelters, military positions, gang territory and black-market infrastructure.

The district’s present form is the result of several layers of abandonment. The failed resort vision survives in the broad roads, extravagant buildings and concrete skeletons, while the combat zone survives in barricades, improvised homes, scavenged machinery and heavily armed patrols. The contrast is one of Dogtown’s defining features: it was designed as a showcase of wealth, but functions as a fortified refuge for people excluded from the formal city.

According to the in-game background material, Militech had also used the area for secret military work before the later redevelopment effort. The discovery of old facilities, unexploded ordnance and incomplete records helped justify walling the area off under the pretext of safety hazards. The wall ultimately became a political convenience. It isolated a dangerous and embarrassing district while allowing local power brokers to operate outside ordinary civic oversight.

Hansen, a former NUSA colonel who took control during and after the Unification War, transformed the isolated zone into a private fiefdom. His militia, BARGHEST, controls entry, commerce and public order. Dogtown is therefore neither a normal Night City district nor an independent nation. It is a de facto military enclave inside the city.

Boundaries and neighbouring areas

Dogtown is best understood as the walled area east of Pacifica’s Coastview and West Wind Estate. The wall and guarded entrances are more meaningful than the district labels on the wider map. A player approaching from Pacifica may see the stadium and outer roads before reaching the main checkpoint, but the surrounding Pacifica streets are not automatically Dogtown.

Included within Dogtown

The following names are used for locations or sectors within the Dogtown play space:

Some of these are broad map sectors, some are buildings and others are mission-specific locations. They should not be treated as equivalent administrative districts. In particular, The Moth, Heavy Hearts, Black Sapphire and Cynosure Facility are named destinations within the larger Dogtown area, not separate districts.

Outside the scope

These places are nearby but should not be merged into Dogtown:

The stadium entrance can make the boundary confusing because the approach road and surrounding Pacifica space are visually connected. The practical rule is simple: if the area is beyond the BARGHEST-controlled wall and checkpoint, it is Dogtown; if it is on the Pacifica side of the barrier, it is not.

Geography and districts

Longshore Stacks

Longshore Stacks is Dogtown’s most recognisable residential quarter. Its buildings are assembled from shipping containers, construction material, scrap, temporary walls and repurposed industrial equipment. It has a denser civilian presence than the fortified compounds elsewhere in the district.

This is one of the best areas for observing ordinary Dogtown life. Residents drink, trade, repair equipment, listen to music and move through narrow lanes that feel more like a settlement than a conventional Night City neighbourhood. The area also contains bars, informal services and routes towards the stadium market.

The Stacks are especially useful as an orientation point. If the stadium represents Dogtown’s formal commercial centre, Longshore represents its improvised civilian economy.

EBM Petrochem Stadium

The stadium is Dogtown’s largest public landmark and its principal commercial hub. It was originally intended to be the centrepiece of the Serenisands redevelopment, but the unfinished structure has become a market, military position and transport landmark.

The stadium area is where players first encounter much of Dogtown’s practical infrastructure. The Black Market is located here, along with weapon and cyberware-related services introduced through the expansion. It is also one of the easiest places to return to when comparing vendors or selling loot.

The stadium is not simply a shop area. It contains military spaces, interior corridors, upper walkways and routes used during the opening Phantom Liberty missions. Several doors and sections are only meaningful during specific story states.

Golden Pacific

Golden Pacific is the clearest expression of Dogtown’s failed luxury vision. It contains unfinished or degraded resort-style structures, broad approaches and spaces that were intended to serve wealthy visitors rather than displaced residents.

The area is valuable for exploration because its open architecture gives way to swimming pools, hotel-like spaces, construction zones and hidden loot. It also illustrates the distinction between a planned landmark and a functional business. A building may still carry a luxury or hotel identity without operating as a conventional purchasable service.

The Los Osos Motel swimming pool is a notable fixed-loot area. One of the scripted airdrop-related placements in Golden Pacific contains the Iconic Laika weapon and additional equipment. This should not be confused with the recurring airdrop activity, which uses semi-random placements and loot states.

Luxor Heights

Luxor Heights is a more elevated and fortified section of Dogtown, associated with large unfinished buildings, security positions and expensive development projects. Its architecture contrasts with Longshore Stacks: instead of dense improvised housing, it presents broad structures, exposed concrete, high walls and military control.

The name is sometimes used loosely for the wider northern or central luxury-development area. For navigation, treat it as a landmark sector rather than a precise collection of independent streets.

Terra Cognita

Terra Cognita is an exhibition and development area with large open interiors and heavily guarded sites. It is particularly important for combat encounters and Increased Criminal Activity content.

The district’s exhibition architecture is another reminder that Dogtown was once supposed to attract investment and visitors. In the present day, those spaces are used for weapons dealing, militia operations, hostile hideouts and abandoned infrastructure.

Kress Street and the southern sectors

Kress Street is a useful navigation reference for southern Dogtown and has an associated fast-travel point. The surrounding area contains industrial structures, tunnels, BARGHEST positions and hostile activity. It is also close to major combat encounters and Increased Criminal Activity locations.

The southern portion of Dogtown is less residential and more operational. It contains hidden facilities, militia activity and several missions in which the player enters secured buildings rather than simply following public roads.

Black Sapphire and Heavy Hearts

The Black Sapphire is Hansen’s major fortified luxury compound. It is both a political venue and a mission location. Its importance is primarily narrative, although its surrounding construction areas also contain combat and loot opportunities.

Heavy Hearts is Dogtown’s major club and another prominent story location. It functions as a social and political venue, not merely as a conventional nightclub. Access and the meaning of the location depend on mission progress.

Cynosure Facility

Cynosure is a restricted, story-associated facility connected to the expansion’s most dangerous technology and lore. It is not a freely accessible public Dogtown district. Much of its significance comes from mission-only access and progression-dependent exploration.

Players should treat Cynosure as a controlled narrative location rather than a normal open-world building. Attempts to catalogue every room as permanent free-roam content risk confusing temporary mission layouts with the district’s ordinary geography.

Access and routes

Dogtown becomes available during “Dog Eat Dog”, the opening Phantom Liberty mission. The expansion’s story draws V towards the Dogtown entrance after Songbird makes contact and offers help with V’s condition in exchange for assistance.

Entering Dogtown

The first entry is story-directed. Later visits are much more flexible, although some interiors remain locked until their associated missions.

Travelling within Dogtown

Dogtown rewards vertical exploration. Roads often lead underneath bridges or around walls while walkways, scaffolds and unfinished floors provide shortcuts. The following route is practical for a first free-roam circuit:

The wall is not merely decorative. Some apparent shortcuts terminate at inaccessible barriers, while others become usable only during missions.

Residents, characters and factions

BARGHEST

BARGHEST is Dogtown’s ruling militia and security apparatus. Its members are former soldiers, heavily armed enforcers, checkpoint guards and local power brokers. They collect taxes or tolls, regulate movement, secure important buildings and suppress threats to Hansen’s control.

BARGHEST is not a normal gang. It has military discipline, heavier equipment and a command structure inherited from Hansen’s wartime background. At the same time, it is not a legitimate police force. Its priorities are regime stability, revenue and the protection of Hansen’s authority.

Kurt Hansen

Kurt Hansen is Dogtown’s ruler at the beginning of Phantom Liberty. He presents the district as an independent refuge from Night City’s corporations and government, but his system is authoritarian and heavily unequal.

Hansen’s leadership is felt everywhere: at the checkpoints, in the militia uniforms, in the weapon trade and in the way Dogtown’s residents depend on permission from armed authorities. His fate during the expansion changes the district’s power structure.

Mr Hands

Mr Hands is Dogtown’s fixer and the player’s main source of local gigs. His jobs cover rescue, extraction, infiltration, assassination and damage control. Dogtown has nine dedicated Mr Hands gigs, although some map counters can misleadingly display ten because the Pacifica gig “Two Wrongs Make Us Right” may be counted alongside them.

Solomon Reed, Songbird and Alex

These characters are associated with the Phantom Liberty main story rather than ordinary Dogtown residency. Their missions use Dogtown as a covert-operational environment involving NUSA intelligence, espionage, betrayal and the consequences of Blackwall research.

They should therefore be listed as story-associated visitors and operatives, not as permanent local residents.

Chester Bennett and Jago Szabó

If Hansen is removed, Chester Bennett and Jago Szabó become central to the question of who controls Dogtown. Their rivalry represents a change from one-man military rule to a contested succession. The consequences are visible in post-story conversations and the district’s political atmosphere.

Law enforcement and security

Dogtown has no ordinary NCPD response system. BARGHEST guards its gates, patrols its streets and defends its installations. The result is a different security logic from the rest of Night City:

Trauma Team also operates under different practical assumptions in Dogtown. The area is considered too dangerous for routine intervention, and many residents lack the insurance that would normally trigger a rapid rescue response.

  • checkpoints matter more than wanted-level policing;
  • armed BARGHEST units protect territory and leadership;
  • civilians may be ignored unless they threaten local order;
  • restricted compounds are defended aggressively;
  • combat in one area can attract nearby militia units;
  • the district’s ruling faction may change after story events.

Businesses and services

Dogtown Black Market

The Black Market is the district’s most important permanent commercial service. Its weapon vendor sells high-end and Iconic equipment, including some items the player may have missed through earlier story choices. It is also a practical place to sell excess weapons and compare expansion gear.

Do not confuse the Black Market with every stall in the stadium. Dogtown contains decorative storefronts, food stands and background traders that do not necessarily provide a purchasable service.

Ripperdoc and vendors

Dogtown provides access to expansion-related shopping and equipment services, but vendor availability and inventories can depend on progression, patch version and the specific shop. Where a source confirms a shop’s function, it should be treated as functional; a named storefront or visible counter alone does not prove that it is interactive.

Autofixer and vehicle contracts

El Capitan provides repeatable vehicle-retrieval contracts in Dogtown. These jobs involve recovering or delivering vehicles under pressure and reward cash, equipment and progression towards vehicle-related purchases. They are distinct from fixed story missions and do not use a fully procedural open world. The mission framework is repeatable, while routes, combat complications and available vehicles can vary.

Activities and mission directory

Phantom Liberty main missions

Several late missions branch according to major choices. Do not assume that every listed mission occurs in the same sequence or that all branches remain available in one playthrough.

Dogtown gigs

These gigs are separate from the Phantom Liberty main story. Some contain unique weapons, named enemies, choice-dependent outcomes or mission-only interiors. The safest completion method is to accept every available Hands job before advancing the expansion’s final act, then revisit the fixer after major story milestones.

Phantom Liberty side jobs

Some are directly tied to Dogtown residents or BARGHEST personnel, while others use the district as a starting point before sending V elsewhere.

Repeatable and open-world activities

Airdrops

Airdrops are marked by red smoke and attract hostile groups. They are among Dogtown’s signature activities. Players must reach the crate, solve or bypass its access mechanism, defeat or evade the competing forces and extract the loot.

The two systems overlap visually but should not be treated as identical. Fixed placements include documented caches at locations such as the Los Osos Motel swimming pool and a Brave Atlas construction site.

Increased Criminal Activity

These are Dogtown’s equivalent of major hostile-site clearances. They are larger and more structured than ordinary street fights, with fortified BARGHEST or criminal positions, elite enemies and valuable loot.

The Kress Street area, the Luxor hideout and Terra Cognita exhibition spaces are associated with major hostile activities.

Militech Data Terminals

Militech Data Terminals provide Relic progression points. They are hidden around Dogtown and are often placed near combat sites, elevated structures or less obvious side routes. The terminals are marked by a blue Relic-related signal when V is close.

A good collection order is to search each area immediately after clearing it rather than trying to remember unexplored rooftops later. The district’s terminals are not all located in the central stadium or along the main story route.

Vehicle contracts

Vehicle contracts are repeatable activities associated with El Capitan. They are useful for money, equipment and vehicle progression, but they are not a substitute for fixed Dogtown missions. Check the vehicle, read the contract conditions and be prepared for pursuit or ambushes after taking possession.

Airdrops: Airdrops should be divided into two categories

Airdrops: Airdrops should be divided into two categories
  1. 1Recurring airdrops: semi-random or repeatable supply events with changing contents and opposition.
  2. 2Fixed scripted placements: one-time locations tied to specific loot, environmental storytelling or Iconic weapons.

Increased Criminal Activity: A thorough clear should include

All locations
  • the main objective;
  • all side rooms and roofs;
  • weapon cases;
  • shards and terminals;
  • elite enemies;
  • any nearby Militech Data Terminal.

Enemies and major encounters

Major named encounters include Kurt Hansen and the Chimera, the prototype combat machine encountered during the expansion’s main story. These are not ordinary open-world bosses and should be treated as progression encounters.

The district also contains mission-specific named enemies, cyberpsychotic combatants and elite BARGHEST officers. Their availability may depend on the order in which the player completes missions. A named enemy appearing in a gig should not be assumed to respawn as a normal free-roam boss.

Dogtown’s ordinary enemies are primarily

All locations
  • BARGHEST soldiers
  • BARGHEST heavy units
  • BARGHEST netrunners
  • militia snipers
  • smugglers and black-market criminals
  • hostile scavengers
  • elite compound defenders
  • mission-specific operatives

Items, Iconics and collectibles

Dogtown has several types of collectible or high-value content:

Iconic weapons require particular care because some are affected by mission choices. The Black Market can restore access to some missed Iconics, but this does not mean every choice-dependent item is universally recoverable. Fixed mission rewards, airdrop rewards and vendor stock should be tracked separately.

The most reliable completion practice is to make a manual save before major Phantom Liberty branch missions, especially before Firestarter, and to inspect every named enemy and locked room before leaving a mission area.

Progression changes and missable content

Dogtown is unusually sensitive to progression state.

Before entering

Without Phantom Liberty, the Dogtown content, Relic system, expansion missions and district-specific activities are not available as normal playable content. The wider Pacifica district remains part of the base game, but it should not be confused with the expansion map.

Early expansion

The opening missions guide V through restricted routes, temporary shelters and mission-only interiors. Some apparent shops or doors are not freely usable at this stage.

After the introduction

Once the initial sequence is complete, V can explore the district, use its vendors, accept Hands’ gigs and begin collecting Relic terminals. This is the best point for a first systematic sweep.

After Hansen’s removal

Hansen’s death changes the political situation. Bennett and Jago become associated with the succession struggle. Dialogue, faction presence and some post-story details reflect this state.

Branch missions

Because some rewards are tied to a branch rather than a simple location, a geographical checklist alone is not enough for full completion.

Branch missions: The expansion’s major decision points can affect

All locations
  • available later missions;
  • character survival;
  • Iconic weapon rewards;
  • access to certain rooms;
  • which faction controls or occupies locations;
  • the availability of endings and post-expansion content.

For a practical completion run

For a practical completion run
  1. 1Finish the introductory Dogtown missions until free exploration is available.
  2. 2Visit the Stadium market and Black Market.
  3. 3Unlock the main Dogtown fast-travel points.
  4. 4Explore Longshore Stacks and The Moth.
  5. 5Clear Golden Pacific and inspect Los Osos Motel.
  6. 6Search Luxor Heights and Terra Cognita vertically, including roofs and walkways.
  7. 7Investigate Kress Street and the southern sectors.
  8. 8Complete every available Mr Hands gig before the final main-story branch.
  9. 9Search every Increased Criminal Activity site after combat ends.
  10. 10Collect nearby Militech Data Terminals while each site is fresh.
  11. 11Complete vehicle contracts as they appear.
  12. 12Before Firestarter, create a manual save if collecting every branch reward.
  13. 13Revisit the Black Market after major story milestones.
  14. 14Check for newly available side jobs after the expansion’s ending.

Common mistakes

Treating Dogtown as all of Pacifica

Dogtown is only the walled combat zone. Coastview, West Wind Estate and the base-game Pacifica gigs remain separate areas.

Counting the Stadium as the whole district

The stadium is the easiest landmark and the main shopping hub, but Longshore Stacks, Golden Pacific, Luxor Heights, Terra Cognita, Kress Street and the southern facilities are all part of the wider scope.

Assuming every airdrop is fixed

Recurring airdrops and fixed scripted caches are different systems. A particular Iconic weapon may require a specific scripted placement, while other airdrops use changing loot pools.

Assuming every storefront works

Some named buildings are functional businesses, some are mission venues and others are scenery. A sign, bar counter or shopfront does not prove that the player can buy services there.

Leaving terminals until the end

Relic terminals are often near combat areas and may be hidden above or behind the main route. Search immediately after clearing each hostile site.

Frequently asked questions

The intended and supported route is to own the expansion and begin “Dog Eat Dog”. Exploits and out-of-bounds methods are not reliable evidence of normal access and can produce unloaded assets, missing NPCs or incomplete interiors.
