About this guide
Scope: Cyberpunk 2077 base game location, including the NCART system added in Update 2.1. This guide covers the Metro: Japantown South station and its immediate playable setting, not the whole Japantown sub-district. Japantown itself is a much larger Westbrook area containing places such as Jig-Jig Street, Cherry Blossom Market, Dark Matter and Fourth Wall Studios. Those locations are neighbouring destinations rather than subareas of this station. Status: Research-based guide. The game does not provide a formal boundary polygon for individual metro stations, so the station’s scope below follows its map marker, accessible platform area, surrounding streets and directly associated activities. Where the evidence does not establish a precise boundary, that uncertainty is stated rather than filled in by inference.
Overview
Metro: Japantown South is an NCART station in Japantown, Westbrook, serving the southern part of the district. It is one of the 19 stations made fully usable by Update 2.1, which added both fast travel and rideable metro trains to Cyberpunk 2077.
Unlike a major dungeon or mission hub, Japantown South is primarily a transport and navigation location. Its importance comes from its position on several metro routes, its relationship with the southern edge of Japantown and its use as environmental scenery in the wider city. It is also relevant to the hidden side job The Highwayman, although the mission’s principal Japantown meeting point is not established as being inside the station itself.
The station should therefore be read as a connection point rather than as a self-contained commercial complex. The platform has the usual NCART functions, but there is no verified vendor, apartment, ripperdoc, weapon shop, fixer office or unique loot cache that can be confidently assigned to the station as a permanent feature.
Location and boundaries
Administrative hierarchy
Japantown is one of Westbrook’s three named sub-districts, alongside Charter Hill and North Oak. It is presented as a busy entertainment and tourism district, with restaurants, bars, gaming venues, the Cherry Blossom Market and a Shinto shrine. Tyger Claws have a strong presence in the wider area.
Those broader district characteristics are useful context, but they should not be mistaken for features of the metro station itself. For example, Jig-Jig Street, Cherry Blossom Market and Dark Matter belong to Japantown as a whole. They are not confirmed internal zones of Metro: Japantown South.
Practical station boundary
The most defensible boundary is the area that includes:
This distinction matters because online map guides often list all Japantown fast-travel points and shops together. A district directory is not the same thing as a station directory. Japantown’s published fast-travel list includes Metro: Japantown South alongside numerous separate locations such as Capitola St, Cherry Blossom Market, Dark Matter, Fourth Wall Studios, Japantown Apartment and Metro: Monroe & Sagan.
Administrative hierarchy: The hierarchy is
- 01Night City
- 02Westbrook
- 03Japantown
- 04Metro: Japantown South
The station itself
Metro: Japantown South is a modern NCART stop integrated into the dense urban infrastructure of southern Japantown. Its main gameplay purpose is movement rather than combat, exploration or shopping.
Update 2.1 made the metro a fully functional system. CD Projekt Red describes the feature as allowing V to travel between 19 stations on five lines either by fast travel or by boarding the train.
There is no evidence that the station contains a unique named interior area, a separate mission dungeon or a permanent store inventory. It should not be approached like a gig location such as a warehouse, club or gang hideout.
Station directory
Verified named entries directly associated with the station:
No additional named shop, vendor, resident, boss, collectible set or permanent interior business is securely established by the available evidence.

NCART routes and connections
Metro: Japantown South is listed on at least two published routes.
Line D, green line
Line D is described as a loop route. Its published sequence includes:
The route listing makes Line D useful for reaching City Center and Heywood without changing trains, although the exact travel direction and interface presentation can depend on whether the player is boarding, fast travelling or selecting a destination from the metro menu.
Line E, orange line
Line E provides another route through Westbrook, City Center, Heywood, Santo Domingo and Watson. Published station lists include:
The line is particularly useful for reaching the eastern and southern parts of the city, although a fast-travel jump may be quicker than riding the entire route.
Nearby metro connections
The closest directly comparable station in the same sub-district is:
Other Japantown fast-travel points are not metro stations. They include street-level dataterms at locations such as:
These are useful destinations within Japantown, but they are separate map locations and should not be treated as station subareas.

Access and progression
When the station becomes usable
The NCART system is tied to the post-Act 1 version of Night City. Update 2.1’s patch notes state that V’s NCART City Pass issue is resolved and that V can then travel through the 19 stations on five lines.
A player using an older pre-2.1 version will not have the same functional metro system. The station infrastructure may exist visually in the world, but the fully rideable NCART feature was added with Update 2.1.
Does Phantom Liberty matter?
No expansion is required for the station. It is part of the Night City base-game map and belongs to Westbrook rather than Dogtown.
Phantom Liberty can coexist with the station on a current save, but the station itself is not a Dogtown feature and does not require access to the expansion’s progression.
When the station becomes usable: For practical purposes
- 01Complete the early main-story sequence through Konpeki Plaza.
- 02Continue until the open-world map and normal city exploration are available.
- 03Allow the NCART system and City Pass functionality to become available.
- 04Discover or select Metro: Japantown South.
- 05Use it either as a fast-travel destination or as a boarding point for a train ride.
Navigation guide
Fast-travel route
To use Metro: Japantown South as a conventional fast-travel point:
If the marker is not available, the usual explanations are:
Riding the train
The train ride is primarily an immersion feature, but it is also useful for learning Night City’s spatial relationships. Update 2.1 specifically introduced the ability to sit on the train, look out of the window and travel between the city’s metro stations.
Recommended exploration route
This route keeps the station and the broader Japantown attractions distinct while still showing how the stop functions within the neighbourhood.
Fast-travel route
- 01Open the map in an area where fast travel is available.
- 02Filter or scan for fast-travel dataterms.
- 03Select Metro: Japantown South under Japantown or Westbrook.
- 04Confirm the destination.
- 05Arrive at the station’s street-level access point.
Riding the train: To ride rather than teleport
- 01Approach the station entrance.
- 02Enter the passenger area and follow the platform access.
- 03Wait for an NCART train.
- 04Board when the doors open.
- 05Use the route or destination interface where prompted.
- 06Remain on board for the journey, or leave at the chosen station.
Recommended exploration route: For a short, sensible visit
- 01Begin at Metro: Japantown South.
- 02Examine the station entrance, platform signage and surrounding elevated infrastructure.
- 03Walk north through Japantown rather than treating the station as an isolated building.
- 04Continue towards the wider commercial and entertainment areas.
- 05Use Japantown West, Cherry Blossom Market, Jig-Jig Street or Metro: Monroe & Sagan as separate destinations.
- 06Return to Japantown South by road or train if you want to compare the station’s southern position with the rest of the district.
Missions and activities
The Highwayman
The Highwayman is the most relevant named side activity connected to the southern Japantown area, but it is not a station mission in the strict sense.
The side job begins through an investigation connected to a garage in Rancho Coronado. V later meets James in Japantown, after which the investigation leads to a metro station in The Glen, Heywood, where V examines blood and finds Josie. The player then returns to James before travelling to Northside to resolve the stolen-bike portion of the story.
Basic walkthrough
Because the mission moves between multiple districts, it is best treated as a city-wide side job with a Japantown chapter rather than as content contained within Metro: Japantown South.
Other activities
No fixed gig, NCPD Scanner Hustle, cyberpsycho encounter or boss arena is securely assigned to the station itself in the available sources.
Japantown as a whole contains multiple gigs, including:
These are Japantown district activities, not automatically station activities. A guide to the station should not claim that they begin inside or immediately beneath Metro: Japantown South without location-specific evidence.
Basic walkthrough
- 01Find the relevant garage in Rancho Coronado.
- 02Inspect the bike and the nearby evidence to begin the investigation.
- 03Travel to Japantown and locate James.
- 04Speak with him about Josie.
- 05Go to the marked station in The Glen, Heywood.
- 06Scan the blood traces and follow them into the nearby area.
- 07Find Josie’s body.
- 08Return to James in Japantown.
- 09Resolve the confrontation through dialogue or combat.
- 10Travel to Northside, enter Josie’s garage using the required code and claim the motorcycle if the mission outcome permits it.
Other activities
Residents, factions and security
Tyger Claws
The Tyger Claws are the dominant gang associated with Japantown in the wider district. Japantown’s presentation emphasises Japanese cultural identity, nightlife, tourism and Tyger Claws control.
That does not mean every NPC around Metro: Japantown South is a gang member, nor that the station is a Tyger Claws-controlled combat zone. The station normally functions as public infrastructure. Gang members, civilians, tourists, workers and other ordinary NPCs may appear in the surrounding streets, but individual encounters should not be described as fixed station content unless they are tied to a mission or a reproducible event.
NCPD
The station is not presented as a police facility. NCPD response is governed by the normal open-world wanted system rather than by a station-specific security rule.
Businesses and services
Not verified as station services
There is insufficient evidence to assign the following to the station:
Japantown contains many commercial locations, but the existence of a business in the district does not prove that it operates inside Metro: Japantown South. This is particularly important for background storefronts and decorative signs, which may be environmental dressing rather than purchasable or interactive services.
Items and collectibles
No station-exclusive collectible collection is confirmed.
There is no verified iconic weapon, tarot card, skill shard, shard cache, cyberpsycho clue or unique clothing item that can be confidently listed as a permanent Metro: Japantown South reward.
Hazards and secrets
Trains and platform edges
The principal environmental hazard is the moving NCART train and the platform edge. The station is designed for passenger use, not for unrestricted access to rail infrastructure. Jumping onto tracks or reaching inaccessible elevated sections can involve collision problems, falls, forced repositioning or other unintended behaviour.
Such exploration is not a supported route to a hidden station reward. Community reports describe attempts to access otherwise inaccessible metro infrastructure through parkour and elevated routes, but these are not reliable canonical navigation methods and should not be treated as official station content.
Mission-related missability
The station itself has no verified missable reward or permanent story state. The Highwayman, however, is a separate hidden side job with its own initiation conditions. If a player wants to complete it, they should investigate the relevant Rancho Coronado garage rather than waiting for a marker at Metro: Japantown South.
Lore and atmosphere
Japantown is presented as a district where tourism, entertainment and wealth sit alongside gang influence and urban inequality. Its vertical architecture is deliberately theatrical. Skyscraper casinos, neon advertisements and high-rise structures make the area visible from elsewhere in Night City, while the commercial landscape encourages visitors to spend money in a tightly managed entertainment environment. The Official Digital Artbook describes Japantown as positioned between City Center and North Oak, using tall buildings and bright signs to attract both wealthy customers and people who want to imitate that lifestyle for a night.
Metro: Japantown South fits that design language. It is not an isolated suburban station. It is part of a dense, layered urban district where transport infrastructure, elevated roads, high-rise façades, nightlife and public pedestrian space overlap.
The station also shows the contrast between two versions of Cyberpunk 2077:
Comprehensive named directory
Separate neighbouring Japantown locations
These are in the same sub-district but are not confirmed components of Metro: Japantown South:
This directory is deliberately separated because consolidating every Japantown location under the station would make the station’s boundaries inaccurate. The broader Japantown location list and fast-travel list support these as distinct destinations.
Directly within the station scope
