The Badlands

The Badlands are the desert region surrounding Night City.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The Badlands are a broad district, not a single desert settlement The game’s database describes eight varying zones, including Red Peaks, Rocky Ridge, Sierra Sonora, the Biotechnica protein farm, Jackson Plains and Laguna Bend.
  • The practical map is usually divided into Badlands East and Badlands South Guides and activity indexes commonly use those two gameplay regions, while individual landmarks provide the more useful local divisions.
  • Rocky Ridge is Dakota’s base and a major story hub, but it is not the whole Badlands.
  • The Aldecaldos and Wraiths are the defining factions The Aldecaldos maintain a nomad camp, while the Wraiths occupy scattered camps, ambush sites and mission locations.
  • Most Badlands content opens after the prologue Nomad-lifepath players begin here, while other lifepaths generally reach the region after The Heist, when the wider map becomes available.
  • The district is especially valuable for Panam’s quests, Dakota’s gigs, Aldecaldo equipment and the Nomad-related endings.

About this guide

Scope: Cyberpunk 2077 base game, including the 2.0–2.31-era open world where relevant. Phantom Liberty’s Dogtown is excluded. Status: Researched guide. The Badlands contain a large number of minor encounters, loot containers and procedurally placed enemy groups, so this guide distinguishes verified named locations from exhaustive activity-by-activity map data.

Overview

The Badlands are the desert region surrounding Night City. They are not simply the area around Rocky Ridge or the Aldecaldo camp. The district extends across the eastern and southern approaches to the city, covering abandoned settlements, contaminated plains, corporate agriculture, wind farms, power infrastructure, motels, border roads, lakes and nomad territory.

The region is one of the most important areas in Cyberpunk 2077 because it gives the game’s nomad culture a physical setting. Inside Night City, corporations and gangs compete over dense urban territory. In the Badlands, the conflict is more dispersed: nomad clans, Raffen Shiv, corporations, private security forces, scavengers and isolated settlers fight over roads, fuel, water, salvage and access to the city.

The district is also central to Panam Palmer’s storyline, the Aldecaldos, Dakota Smith’s fixer jobs and the Nomad lifepath opening. Its wide roads make it the best part of the game for off-road driving, although the apparent emptiness is deceptive. Many activities are spread over large distances and several important locations are only used during missions.

Eastern Badlands directory

The exact relationship between some map labels and the broader named zones is not always exposed consistently by the game’s user interface. For example, fast-travel lists often identify a point such as “Old Turbines” or “Far Ridge” without displaying a formal subdistrict label.

Southern Badlands directory

The Biotechnica protein farm is one of the most visually distinctive locations in the district. Its vast greenhouse structures contrast with the dry desert surrounding them. It also hosts several gigs and minor activities, including mission locations that are not accessible in the same way before and after their associated quest.

Southern Badlands directory

From the city

Once the open world becomes available, the Badlands can be reached by driving east or south from Night City. The most practical routes are:

The official Cyberpunk website specifically recommends Rattlesnake Creek, beyond the solar power station, as an off-road route through the southern Badlands.

From the city: steps

  1. 01
Eastern highway route: Follow the main road out towards Rocky Ridge, Dakota’s workshop and the nomad territories.
  2. 02
Southern route: Travel past the southern city approaches towards the solar facilities, Biotechnica Flats and the protein farm.
  3. 03
Pacifica-side approach: Useful for reaching the southern Badlands and Rattlesnake Creek, although the route can be less direct.
  4. 04
Fast travel: Use any discovered Badlands dataterm, especially Rocky Ridge, Nomad Camp, Protein Farm, Dam, Regional Airport or Oil Fields.

Nomad lifepath

Nomad V begins in the Badlands during the lifepath prologue. This opening is not a free-roaming version of the whole district. It is a short, mission-controlled introduction involving the border and a deal with Jackie Welles. After the prologue, the wider map remains restricted until the early story progression is complete.

The Nomad opening establishes several ideas that dominate the district:

Suggested exploration routes

Route 1: Dakota and the eastern settlements

This route is best for Dakota’s gigs, Wraith encounters and nomad-related exploration.

Route 2: Southern agriculture and infrastructure

This route combines the district’s most scenic landscapes with its most important corporate and environmental locations.

Route 3: Story-first route

This avoids travelling repeatedly across the same roads and makes the changes to the Aldecaldo camp easier to notice.

Dakota Smith

Dakota is the Badlands fixer. She operates from an auto-repair workshop in Rocky Ridge and coordinates mercenary work throughout the region. Her jobs include rescues, thefts, sabotage and recovery missions involving nomads, corporations and Wraiths.

Dakota’s workshop is both a narrative location and a practical hub. It is not merely a decorative garage. V can receive gigs from Dakota, speak with her during progression and use the surrounding area as a starting point for exploration.

Panam Palmer

Panam is the most important story character associated with the Badlands. She is an Aldecaldo who has left the clan’s immediate orbit after a dispute with Saul. Her missions gradually reconnect her with the group and expose the tensions between personal independence, clan loyalty and survival.

Panam’s missions are also the route to the Aldecaldo ending and one of the romance paths available to V, subject to character and dialogue requirements.

Saul Bright

Saul is the Aldecaldo leader. He values long-term survival, caution and the preservation of the clan, while Panam pushes for more direct and risky action. Their disagreements drive much of the Badlands storyline.

Mitch Anderson and Scorpion

Mitch is a senior Aldecaldo and one of Panam’s closest allies. Scorpion is another prominent clan member. Both are connected to the Kang Tao rescue sequence and the later consequences of the clan’s conflict with outside forces.

Aldecaldos

The Aldecaldos are the principal settled nomad faction in the Badlands. Their camp acts as a social base, vehicle area and mission location. They are not a single loose crowd of travellers. The game presents them as a clan with leadership, internal rules, technical expertise, family ties and a collective interest in protecting its people.

The camp changes in practical importance as the story advances. Some missions open parts of the site or place characters there who are not always present during free exploration.

Wraiths

The Wraiths are exiled nomads and the Aldecaldos’ main local rivals. They occupy camps and abandoned facilities across the eastern Badlands. The district database compares them to scavengers waiting for victims, while map guides describe them as a gang that threatens travellers crossing the region.

Their camps often reward careful scouting. Expect cameras, turrets, snipers, netrunners and overlapping sightlines in larger compounds.

Other residents and visitors

Not every named person seen during a mission is a permanent Badlands resident. Some are visitors, temporary quest actors or enemies loaded only while an activity is active.

---

Dakota’s workshop

Status: Functional fixer location and auto-repair shop.

Dakota’s workshop is the district’s main quest and services hub. It is in Rocky Ridge and serves as the contact point for Badlands gigs. The surrounding town is otherwise largely abandoned, reinforcing the contrast between a working garage and a dead settlement.

Nomad Camp

Status: Functional faction camp, with progression-dependent access.

The Nomad Camp is the Aldecaldos’ base. During free exploration it contains clan members, vehicles and background activity. During Panam’s missions it becomes a major objective location and can contain unique conversations, mission scenes and temporary access routes.

The camp should be revisited after major Panam quests because character positions and available interactions can change.

Rocky Ridge

Status: Abandoned settlement and mission area.

Rocky Ridge is an abandoned town in the eastern Badlands. It is important because Dakota works there and because Panam’s early missions bring V into direct conflict with the Wraiths.

The settlement itself is not a conventional town hub. Most buildings are empty, damaged or mission-oriented. Search rooftops, side rooms and vehicles for loot, but do not expect a complete service economy.

Biotechnica Flats and the Protein Farm

Status: Corporate agricultural area, mission location and exploration zone.

Biotechnica’s protein farm is one of the southern Badlands’ largest complexes. The greenhouse structures dominate the landscape and house workers, security, storage areas and mission content.

The farm is a good example of the Badlands’ central contradiction: the region looks abandoned from a distance, but major corporations use selected areas intensively. The farm’s presence also makes the southern Badlands feel less environmentally ruined than the oil fields and landfill.

Laguna Bend

Status: Lake and scenic landmark, with story relevance.

Laguna Bend is the best-known natural landscape in the Badlands. The database calls it the district’s most picturesque view, while warning that the water is unsafe.

The area is associated with environmental damage, abandoned development and the contrast between natural beauty and corporate pollution. It is also used by story content and nearby exploration activities.

Badlands Dam

Status: Industrial landmark and mission-area facility.

The dam is one of the southern district’s major structures. It is visible from a distance and functions as a navigation landmark even when it is not the direct objective of a quest.

Motels and fuel stations

The Badlands contain several motel and service-station sites. Some provide fast-travel dataterms, vendors or mission staging areas. Others are primarily environmental storytelling locations.

A named motel or fuel station should not automatically be treated as a full business. Some are scenery, some provide limited services and some are accessible only during missions.

---

The Badlands are built around roads rather than city blocks. Roads are useful for speed and orientation, but they are not always safe. The region’s open ground lets hostile groups see V from a long distance, while off-road shortcuts can lead into mines, ambushes or high-level activity sites.

Named examples include

Major travel features

The official game site recommends the southern Rattlesnake Creek route for off-road driving.

Minefields

The eastern minefield contains leftover mines from the Unification War. It acts as a dangerous border area and should be crossed carefully rather than at full speed.

Practical advice

  1. 01
Slow down before entering suspicious open ground.
  2. 02
    Use scanning to identify mines.
  3. 03
Avoid driving directly through mine markers.
  4. 04
    Dismount if visibility is poor.
  5. 05
Save before deliberately exploring the area.

Law enforcement

The Badlands do not have the same dense NCPD presence as Night City. Enforcement is more fragmented. V may encounter:

The absence of a constant city patrol does not make the Badlands consequence-free. Hostile activity is often placed beside roads and can escalate quickly if V drives into a compound.

---

Main story missions

The Badlands host or directly support several main and major side missions:

The precise location of a mission may shift between the Badlands and neighbouring districts. For example, the Badlands are central to Panam’s storyline, but related objectives can send V into city locations, corporate sites or neighbouring territory.

Main story missions

Dakota’s gigs

Dakota’s gigs are the principal repeatable narrative content in the district. They include rescue work, theft, sabotage, vehicle recovery and interventions involving nomad groups.

A notable example is No Fixers, which involves Iris Tanner and the Wraiths. The gig takes place at a Wraith-controlled site in the Badlands and is one of the district’s clearer examples of how Dakota’s work overlaps with nomad politics.

The official fixer system can delay the appearance of messages or vehicle rewards. CD Projekt Red specifically noted that players waiting for a Badlands-related message should remain in the area and move away from Dakota’s workshop.

NCPD Scanner Hustles

The Badlands contain Assault in Progress, Reported Crime and Suspected Organised Crime activities. These are distributed across Badlands East and Badlands South rather than concentrated in Rocky Ridge.

A scanner activity can fail to register if the evidence or required loot is not collected. CD Projekt Red’s patch notes document fixes for Badlands Assault in Progress activities that did not complete after the objective was fulfilled.

Cyberpsychos

Cyberpsycho encounters are scattered around the district and are separate from ordinary Wraith or NCPD groups. They are marked individually and usually provide a shard, a fight-specific reward and progress towards Regina Jones’s cyberpsycho investigation.

Because the exact enemy build, loot quality and level scaling vary by version, treat the encounter reward as activity-specific rather than assuming every Badlands cyberpsycho has a fixed iconic item.

Other activities

Random encounters and procedural enemy groups should not be confused with fixed named locations. A Wraith convoy or roadside shootout may appear as open-world content without representing a permanent settlement.

---

Vehicles

The Badlands are strongly associated with cars and nomad vehicles. Panam’s storyline and Dakota’s work can unlock or enable access to vehicles, including the Archer Quartz “Bandit”, which can become available as a reward or purchase depending on progression and choices after Ghost Town.

The district is also a good place to test off-road handling. Nomad vehicles are especially appropriate for the broken tracks and open desert, although most cars can cross the region if the driver avoids mines and steep terrain.

Weapons and gear

Some map guides list weapon vendors and individual item pools at locations such as the Sunset Motel. These inventories can depend on level, patch version and vendor availability, so they should be treated as shop inventories rather than guaranteed fixed treasure.

Collectibles and shards

The district contains datashards, readable shards and environmental clues. Their distribution is broad, especially around:

A full collectible checklist should be maintained separately from a location directory because many shards are attached to activities rather than named landmarks.

---

The Badlands change mainly through quest states rather than permanent district-wide rebuilding.

Missability warnings

---

The Badlands show what happens when the state and corporations maintain infrastructure only where it remains profitable. Roads, farms, power plants, fuel stations and border posts continue to function, but huge areas between them have been abandoned.

The Aldecaldos represent a form of community outside the city, but they are not free from hierarchy or danger. The Wraiths represent the predatory side of nomad exclusion, while corporations treat the region as a space for extraction, transport, testing and agricultural production.

The game’s map description deliberately frames the Badlands as both dangerous and picturesque. That tension is the district’s defining identity: it is a place players are invited to admire from the driver’s seat while constantly being reminded that the land is damaged, contested and unsafe.

Is Rocky Ridge the whole Badlands?

No. Rocky Ridge is one abandoned settlement in the eastern Badlands and is important because Dakota works there. The district also includes southern areas such as Biotechnica Flats, Jackson Plains, Laguna Bend, the solar facilities and the regional airport.

Are the Aldecaldos the only nomads in the Badlands?

No. The Wraiths are another major nomad faction and are hostile to the Aldecaldos and to travellers. Other independent nomads and temporary groups also appear.

Is the Nomad Camp always in the same state?

No. Its residents, activities and accessible areas change during Panam’s storyline. Some scenes are mission-specific.

Can the Badlands be explored immediately?

Nomad V begins there, but the lifepath opening is controlled by the prologue. For all lifepaths, broad free exploration becomes practical after the early main story opens the map.

Is Dogtown part of the Badlands?

No. Dogtown is a separate Phantom Liberty area within Pacifica. It is excluded from this base-game guide.

What is the best way to explore the district?

Use Rocky Ridge and the Solar Power Station as opposing starting points. Explore the east first for Dakota, Wraiths and Aldecaldo material, then sweep south through Rattlesnake Creek, the dam, Laguna Bend and Biotechnica Flats.

Are all named fast-travel points businesses?

No. Some are roads, scenery, farms, abandoned facilities or mission anchors. A name such as “Fuel Station”, “Old Turbines” or “Far Ridge” does not prove that a full shop or service is available there. The fast-travel directory lists many Badlands points without assigning them formal subdistricts.
